Aerodynamics is the study of properties of air while a solid object interacts with air, during their relative motion. Most of us think that aerodynamics is a field of aeronautics and all of aerodynamics is only applicable to aerospace vehicles.

But this isn’t true, aerodynamics is applicable in our day to day life in many ways. There is a major field known as automotive aerodynamics which deals with the aerodynamic study of automobiles. What does aerodynamics has to do with automobiles?
In early ages automobile manufacturers didn’t consider aerodynamic design for their automobiles, as it didn’t seem to have much impact on vehicles performance. But with advancements in technology aerodynamic design became one of the key factor for improving performance of the vehicle.
What does automotive aerodynamics exactly improve?
With an aerodynamic design the amount of drag (resistance force) can be reduced, which in-turn provides lesser fuel consumption and higher fuel efficiency. Automotive aerodynamics mainly focus on drag reduction, reducing noise emission and preventing aerodynamic instabilities during vehicles operation.
Method of study
Automotive aerodynamic study is carried out using computational and wind tunnel studies. Some of aerodynamic devices in automobiles are Splitter, Dive Planes, Hood Vents, NACA Ducts, Side Vents, Side Skirt, Spoiler and rear wing.
